Peter Obi denies arrest rumour

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, has denied being arrested.

Obi made the clarification in a tweet posted on his official X account with the theme ‘The Recurring Fake News On Me’ on Wednesday.

He was reacting to the growing speculation of his alleged arrest which has been trending on social media since Tuesday.

The former governor of Anambra State announced on the social media platform that he had just arrived in his hometown in Onitsha.

The former presidential candidate also raised concerns that this was not the first time rumour mongers would be going to town with such allegations.

He said, “I have been made aware of circulating fake news about my alleged arrest. Let me state unequivocally that these claims are entirely false. I am currently at my home in Onitsha. Anambra State. Such fake news on my person has become a pastime for some people.

“Recall last year September, when I was in Rwanda, similar lies had gone out that DSS invaded my house; now, while I was in my home in Onitsha, Anambra State, they said I was arrested in Abuja. The motive of these peddlers cannot be positive.

“But let us not allow baseless rumours to distract us from the critical challenges we face as a nation. I thank the public for the concern, support, and dedication to the cause of a better Nigeria that is possible!”

His rebuttal comes a few hours after Felix Morka, the National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, claimed that he and his family have received 200 death threats over his inflammatory remarks against Obi.

Morka alleged that the threats were triggered by Obi’s accusation that his remarks during a Sunday interview on Arise Television constituted a threat to the Labour Party candidate’s life.

He strongly denied making any comments that could be interpreted as threatening Obi’s life, describing the allegations as baseless.
