Driver dies in tanker explosion in Kwara

A tanker driver has lost his life in a fire incident that occurred along the Oko-Olowo-Jebba Expressway in Kwara State on Friday.

In a statement on Friday by Hassan Adekunle, Head of Media and Publicity of the Kwara State Fire Service, the accident occurred at about 9:24 am.

Adekunle made it known that the tanker, which was conveying 33,000 litres of petrol, colluded with a truck that was loaded with fertilizer, causing a fuel spill that ignited the fire.

According to him, “The petrol tanker was carrying 33,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit, while the articulated truck was loaded with fertilizer. Upon arrival, our dedicated firefighters immediately took action to contain the fire and prevent further damage. Their swift intervention ensured that the fertilizer cargo was salvaged.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the incident occurred when the articulated truck attempted to overtake the petrol tanker.

“In the process, it struck the rear of the tanker, causing a fuel spill that ignited. Tragically, the driver of the articulated truck was trapped and lost his life.”

Adekunle further urged road users to always exercise caution when on the highway.

“The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John Olumuyiwa, urges all road users to exercise patience, adhere to safety precautions, and prioritise road safety to prevent such devastating incidents,” Adekunle concluded.
