Abigail Marshall Katung: Hail the new Lord of Leeds

Her news is still sizzling fresh and hot. Nigerian-born Abigail Marshall Katung has been announced as the new Lord of Leeds in the United Kingdom, marking a historic moment as the first person of African descent to hold this prestigious position.

From Little London to Lord Mayor

Having been elected to represent the Little London and Woodhouse wards in 2019, Ms. Abigail Marshall Katung, has held various appointments, including the Chair of the Scrutiny Board (Infrastructure, Investment and Inclusive Growth).

Her dedication to social justice and equity has been a consistent theme throughout her career, with a particular focus on the well-being and opportunities of young people in Leeds.

From Nigeria to Leeds

Born and raised in Nigeria, she moved to the UK to study at Leeds University, where she developed a connection with the city, eventually leading to love that propelled her into local government services. 

As a Labour and Co-operative Party Councilor, she expressed deep honour and humility at her unanimous election by colleagues.

Life dedicated to service

Abigail Marshall Katung’s commitment to community service extends beyond her political roles. As the founder of the David Oluwale Memorial Association (DOMA), she honours the memory of David Oluwale and co-chairs the organization.

Throughout her career, she has actively participated in initiatives such as the Leeds City Council’s ‘Foods Champion’ and has been a lead member of the Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) community.

Visionary leadership for Leeds

Mesmerized by the announcement of her appointment, Katung said she’s poised to lead Leeds with a dedicated vision. Her historic appointment as the first elected African Councilor in Leeds reflects her dedication to making a remarkable difference.

As she assumes the role of Lord in May, she aims to make the community’s voice heard and address issues of injustice and inequality. Leeds City College, where she serves as governor, expressed enthusiasm for continued collaboration to provide skills and opportunities in the region.

As the baton changes hands

Abigail Marshall Katung is set to take over from Coun Al Garthwaite, the current Lord Mayor of Leeds, and follows in the footsteps of Coun Eileen Taylor, the first black woman to hold the title in 2019. 

Katung will embark on her term with great pride, as she noted, and with confidence that Leeds anticipates a tenure marked by positive change and inclusivity.

Role of family

Katung’s family had played a significant role in her life, with her husband, Sunday Marshall Katung, serving as a senator in Nigeria, and their 19-year-old twin sons adding joy to their lives.

Celebrated by NIDCOM Chair

Trust Abike Dabiri-Erewa to identify with success as the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), who promptly sent a congratulatory message to Katung on her well-deserved appointment.
