Varsity student drowns in Bayelsa creek over N300 bet

A yet-to-be-identified second-year student of the Department of Chemical Engineering at the Federal University, Otuoke, Bayelsa State, was reported to have drowned at the Ekoli Creek in Yenagoa over a N300 bet.

Although the incident occurred on Sunday morning, the corpse had yet to be recovered, just as the name of the deceased remained unknown.

According to sources who were privy to the development but refused to be mentioned, the victim placed a bet with some people that he could swim across the river. As he was swimming, he went under the water and has not surfaced since.

A source, a student of the university, said, “Yesterday morning, a 200-level Chemical Engineering student made a bet with his coursemates to swim across the river.

“They all raised N300 each for the stake. As he was swimming, he dipped, and he had not been seen after that. He is still missing up till now.”

Attempts to reach the university’s Public Relations Officer, Ms. Mercy Ekott, failed as she did not pick up calls to her mobile number.

Mr. Musa Mohammed, the Police Public Relations Officer, said he was yet to be briefed on the incident.

“I have no information on the incident,” Mohammed said
